Tanners Yard Press

Tanners Yard Press is a small company in Gloucestershire publishing photographic books. To date there are seven titles, with the most recent, Dean's Big Oaks, published in October 2007. All the books feature the photography of Chris Morris; most of them reflect his interest in industrial history.

Tanners Yard Press was conceived in 2001 as an answer to production problems with Work in the Woods at the contract publisher. The success of that book ensured that further projects would follow.

Support
The publication of both the books on Dean was supported by the Countryside Agency, Under Blorenge Mountain by the Blaenavon Partnership. On Tour with Thomas Telford was produced in association with Landmark Publishing.

Supply
All the titles are available from book shops and tourist sites. They can also be ordered, post-free, direct from:

Chris Morris
The author of TYP books has been a professional photographer all his working life. On moving to Gloucestershire in 1999 he began documenting Dean's largely neglected industrial history. An exhibition of the work in Gloucester Guildhall Gallery and publication of Work in the Woods helped to generate a revived interest in the local heritage.

Chris Morris employs a strong graphic style; the use of digital techniques allows conventional photo quality to share the pages with semi-abstract reproductions a little like silk-screen prints.

Future projects

  • Artwork in the Woods – a survey of Arts and Craftmakers in the Forest of Dean

  • A Portrait of the Thames

  • A portfolio of images reflecting the America of thirties song-writer Woody Guthrie.
